Hyundai Kona South African Review

We were lucky enough to be one of the first Hyundai Dealerships to receive the Kona, and we decided to put it to the test. Of course we are avowed Hyundai fans, but that does not take away from the fact that anybody who sets eyes on the Kona will be taken in by its futuristic style. In fact, we'd even go as far as saying that we've never seen something quite like it in South Africa before. Although SUV's are well-known for their personality, the New Hyundai Kona takes this to another level. Ok, so now that we've sung its praises in general let's get down to the nitty gritty.

The Kona is a Looker!

If you don't want to be the centre of attention then this is the wrong vehicle for you! Everywhere we went people stopped to stare at the funky good looks and outstanding stylings that make up the Kona's exterior looks. The attention to detail of the vehicle's exterior by designer Luc Donckerwolke is out of this world and we don't think we've ever seen anything like it in a Hyundai or any other vehicle in South Africa. But for all of this, the Kona is still an SUV, so these good looks are underlined by a sporty yet slightly eccentric aggressiveness that would look as good in Camps bay as it does in Durbanville. This is a middle-class car with upper-class asspirations and this good looking vehicle is not afraid to show it.

Comfort and Convenience Comes Standard!

Many vehicles profess to offer exceptional levels of comfort and convenience, but with the features found in the Kona, Hyundai has most certainly put its money where its mouth is. This is a SUV that talks the talk and walks the walk, as this jaw dropping list of features will testify to:

  • Aux / iPod / USB Connection
  • 4 Speakers and 2 Tweeters
  • Bluetooth
  • Ambient Temperature Display
  • Electric Side Mirrors
  • Electric Windows
  • Sunglass Holder
  • Driver and Passenger Vanity Mirror
  • Cruise Control
  • Rear View Camera & RPDC Park Assist
  • Roof Rails

So How Does it Handle?

The Kona is a dream to drive both in the city and on the open road. It is comfortable as a family car and fun as a runaround vehicle. It is a rare 'best of both worlds' SUV thanks to its big interior space but surprisingly compact size. It offers decent body control while also providing a firm ride and makes a good cruising vehicle as well as an exceptionally competent city car that is ready to take on the urban jungle.

Hyundai Kona Fuel Consumption Figures*

The Hyundai Kona, as with other Hyundai vehicles, is renowned for the economical nature of its engines. They are also both exceptionally eco friendly, as the emissions figures** below will testify to.

Take a look at these exceptional Hyundai Kona Fuel Consumption Figures:

EngineLitres per 100 kms
1.0-litre TGDI6.8 L/100km*
2.0-litre MPI7.2 L/100km*

If you're green friendly but would still like to own a SUV, then you'll want to consider a Hyundai Kona that boasts these eco friendly carbon emission figures:

EngineCO2 Emissions

2.0-litre MPI166g per km**
